Miramichi is a new, dynamic city which was formed in 1995 through the amalgamation of 5 municipalities to form a city. Miramichi is on the mount of the Miramichi River where it enters Miramich Bay. Miramichi culture is grounded in the Mi'kmaq, Acadian, Scottish, and Irish traditions as well as fishing, sailing and lumbering industries. Residents here speak a colourful language of maritime English; if you are looking for an authentic maritime experience, this is the place.
Miramichi is host to several festivals throughout the year many of which are surrounded around music. Miramichi has a folk song festival, a rock n' roll festival, and a fiddle festival. Other festivals and events include Miramichi Salmon Classic, Irish Festival on the Miramichi, Celebration of Scots and Annual Pow-wows. Miramichi is known as a haven for outdoor sport enthusiasts. The river offers white-water opportunities for canoe and kayak, and fishing for Atlantic Salmon and brook trout. A network of trails is available for hiking, cycling, skiing, and snowmobiling.
