The village of Aroostook is on the west bank of the St. John River in Victoria County. Aroostook is 17.7 km (11 mi.) north of the old county shire town of Perth-Andover. Aroostook was founded in 1852 and it was a very important railway centre from 1878 onwards. The New Brunswick Railway and the Aroostook Valley Railway ran through the village, both leased by the Canadian Pacific Railway. A large rail yard and locomotive house were constructed to service the trains in 1890. Although CPR does not currently run trains through Aroostook, there is plenty of railway history there worth visiting.
